Library of Congress Visit

Library of Congress Visit

Thursday, May 16th

*20-person capacity

Please join us at the Madison Building of the Library of Congress at 1:30pm on May 16 for a very special look at highlights of the animal rights and vegetarian/vegan-related collections of the Library of Congress, presented by Library historians Josh Levy and Elizabeth Novara  ---  followed by the opportunity to explore the beautiful public spaces of the Library's historic Jefferson Building.

The historians will show us items from collections, including the papers of animal rights advocate Henry Spira, as well as journalist Ann Cottrell Free, who wrote extensively about animal protection issues. They will also share materials from the archives of the Veg Society of DC, which is the longest continually running veg organization in the United States, as well as other animal rights and veg papers in their collections. Additionally, they will speak about the historical significance of these collections and the collecting process in general.

Logistics:

Please plan to arrive at the Library of Congress’s James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave SE, Washington, DC 20540 at 1:15pm on Thursday, May 16. As with all federal buildings, there is a security screening (metal detector). As you exit security, you will be in the main lobby.

Onsite point person: Elissa Free will meet you in the lobby of the Madison Building at 1:15 p.m. after you pass through security. (Interesting tidbit: Elissa is the daughter of journalist Ann Cottrell Free, and is on the board of VSDC, both mentioned above.)

*Nearby vegan-friendly lunch options:

  • Sweetgreen - 221 Pennsylvania Ave SE  (Salads and bowls with vegan options)

  • Burrito Brothers - 205 Pennsylvania Ave. SE (Many items can be made vegan. No seating, just take-away)

  • Young Chow 312 Pennsylvania Ave. SE (Extensive vegan options)

*There is some outdoor seating in front of the Madison and Jefferson Buildings of the Library. The tables in front of Jefferson have a nice view of the US Capitol but fill up more quickly.

*Food can also be brought into the Madison Building’s cafeteria on the 6th floor, which has many tables and a great view. The cafeteria itself has some vegan options, but it doesn’t get rave reviews…
